sleet in
Wiktionary, the free dictionary.
Sleet refers to two distinct forms of
precipitation:
Rain and snow mixed, snow that partially melts as it falls. (UK, Ireland and Canada)
Ice pellets, one of three forms of precipitation in a US-style "wintry mix", the other two being
snow and
freezing rain. (US)
The latter is referred to as sleet mainly by the
United States National Weather Service. In some countries, such as Canada and the UK, sleet is not a recognized meteorological term.
Environment Canada will call it a mix of snow and rain or "a wintery mix" and will use the term "ice pellets" to describe frozen, granular precipitation.
